How Much Wood Would a Wood Chipper Chip?

“Let your gentleness by evident to all.” Philippians 4:5a NIV I look forward to the third Saturday morning of every month. My H.O.T.Y. (Husband of the Year) takes G-man to the men’s breakfast at church for some good ‘ole fashioned male-bonding time and artery-clogging grub. What does that mean for me? Quiet time to write! This particular Saturday had the potential to be extra special because a trip to a yard sale was on the agenda for the two adventurers after the breakfast meeting.

As I sat in my favorite ‘writing chair’ gazing out across the lake, satisfied with my completed blog for the week, I heard the rumble of the Tacoma tooling up the driveway. G-man came in, a look of sheer delight on his face as he proudly announced that he and dad bought something extra special at the yard sale. Judging by this look, it must be something good! Patio furniture perhaps? An antique end table? Decorative, vintage dishes? Dragging me outside to witness the prize purchase, my excitement grew…. until I looked in the back of the truck.

A wood chipper.

Woodchipper EditedNo, not just any wood chipper – a gargantuan, finger-eating, eye-shooting wood chipper.

Good feeling gone.

To fully understand the ironic humor, you need to know two things about us:

Number one: We are not yard people. How bad is it, you ask? Let’s just say we’ve never been voted “Yard of the Month” in any neighborhood we’ve lived in – ever.

Number two: The neighborhood we now live in actually has a compost pile open to all residents, where we can take fallen limbs, sticks, leaves, etc. free of charge!

With these thoughts spinning around in my mind, it didn't take me long to generate several logical questions that I am absolutely certain my H.O.T.Y. must have considered before making this purchase:

Where are we going to put it??

How much did it cost??

Why do we need it??

Oh yes, be certain of this; I let my concerns be known in a less-than-gentle tone. Quicker than you can say, “How much wood would a wood chipper chip if a wood chipper could chip wood,” those two elated smiles changed into looks of defeat.

“Let your gentleness be evident to all.” Phil 4:5a NIV

Even to my husband? Especially to your husband.

Even to my kids? Especially to your kids.

If I had taken time to process God’s sound advice that day before spewing my condescending attitude, I would have remembered a few simple truths that I have since come to adore.

Number one:  I am blessed to have a Godly husband who enjoys spending ‘guy time’ with his teenage son and sowing into his life.

Number two:  The smiles on the faces of my favorite boys were worth much more than the price of the wood chipper, (which, by the way, was actually quite a bargain).

Number three:  Men like machines. It’s a fact of life.

Above all else, from this experience I realized that my family deserves to see a smooth, steady stream of gentleness flowing from me. And, as an added blessing, I am happy to announce that G-man and H.O.T.Y. still have all their fingers. Now how could I ask for more than that?

 Simply Scripture:

"She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness." Proverbs 31:26 NKJV
