Some may call my decorating style “hodge-podge”; I refer to it as eclectic. Ornaments that adorn my Christmas tree run the gamut – everything from Indiana Jones to ballerinas to the Nativity. And as for accessories? Dust... lots of dust. Think I’m kidding? See below.
Was that a thud I heard? I think one of you just fainted! Oh how I long to be a Decorating Diva like my sister Janet. She and her trusty assistant (husband Zach) transform their home into a festive wonderland each Christmas. They have three trees. Three! Each one displays a unique, whimsical theme. (My favorite is the Grinch tree. I wonder why??)
Janet is truly gifted in the area of decorating. I, however, am not.
“There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of activities, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.” 1 Cor. 12:4-6 NKJV
After completely and whole-heartedly committing my life to the Lord at age 21, I eagerly sought after God to discover the gift He planted in me. I trusted that once it was revealed, I would have exciting opportunities to use that gift to glorify Him – for that, I knew, was the sole purpose of the gift. I prayed for nine years. Then, just like Christmas paper being peeled back one corner at a time, God began unveiling my design. Yes, you read that correctly – nine years.
Oh how thankful I am that the Lord, my Teacher, works according to His timeline and not mine. What was it that took me nine years to learn? Honestly, there were a number of things. But one lesson, I believe, stands out among all the rest...
Accept yourself for the distinct you God created. Don’t exhaust yourself endeavoring to be someone else.
Ahhh, the sweet peace that comes with a lesson learned! My prayer for each of us today is that time will not be a deterrent as we seek to become the individual God desires, but rather it will drive us toward a deeper trust in His plan, His wisdom, and yes, His timing.
“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” James 1:17 NIV
